Special Event: Saxophone Jazz Masterclass Saturday at Bayside Middle School
Date: Saturday, 11 April 2015
Registration/Arrival 8.45-9.00 am
Class 9.00 am - 12.00 followed by pizza lunch: Children to be collected by 1.00 pm.
The
goal of this special workshop is to provide children in Grade 6/7 and 8
(who play saxophone (Bari/Tenor/Alto) the opportunity to work with
professional jazz musicians and teachers. The students will learn new
jazz songs and pick up techniques and hints on how to improve their
performances. This will be great for those in Grade 8 who will be
heading to Whistler to pick up hints on how to raise their performance
levels. At the same time, it will be an excellent opportunity for
those students in Grade 6 and 7 to work with professional saxophone
players and find out how to get the get their saxophones to really rock!
The
workshop will be divided by grade and or ability. There will also be
an opportunity, for some, to receive instruction in French for those
students in French Immersion.
Agenda:
9.00-9.15 am Students divided into groups and new songs/techniques to learn will be presented.
9.15 am Musician spotlight (1): Hints and tips on how to play jazz.
9.30 - 10.30 am Individual group work: Introduction to song to be learnt.
10.30 - 10.45 am Break.
10.45 - 11.00 am Musician spotlight (2): Hints and tips on how to play jazz.
11.00
am Back to individual groups: Rehearse event song: Each student
to have the chance to play solo and receive feedback on performance.
11.45 am Each group to perform their song to the rest of the workshop.
12.00 Lunch: Pizza and refreshments to be delivered and served.
1.00 pm END All children to be collected by parents no later than 1.00pm

Jonnie
Bridgman: After teaching in the school system in interior B.C. over the
past few years, Jonnie moved back to beautiful Victoria and is now
teaching band at Royal Oak Middle School. He holds a diploma in Jazz
Studies from Vancouver Island University and a Bachelor of Music and
teaching certificate from the University of Victoria. He is well versed
in jazz, classical and many other styles of music. Jonnie stays active
in the local music community playing with a number jazz and R & B
groups around town and throughout BC.
Andrew Greenwood was another successful saxophone clinician who supported the Saanich Music Workshop in October 2015.
Noedy
Hechavarria Duharte : Originally from Cuba, Noedy studied
Interpretation Jazz at the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec. He is an
accomplished jazz musician and regular plays with top artists at
jazz/salsa and latin clubs. He is also most recently a qualified,
private teacher of saxophone. He speaks Spanish, French and English.
Subject
to attendance levels we may be able to include a piano player to
accompany the students and teachers while performing. As such, we have
lined up a great piano player: Andrew Slade.

logistic and financial commitments we cannot offer a refund if you do
