*Grade 6/7 science at a glance...

1) Matter and life on Earth:

  • Elements consist of one type of atom

  • Mixtures (6), pure substances (7), physical and chemical transformations (7)

  • 4 reasons why water is an essential compound  (7) for life on Earth, including its crystalline structure (7) when frozen

2) The physical and biological history of the Earth:

  • Earth’s place in the solar system (6) (First Peoples connections, FP)

  • How gravitational attraction works (6)

  • The motion laws that maintain our Sun-Earth-Moon system (6)

  • Creating models to represent large scale phenomena (like the size of our solar system and the length of Earth geological history) (6, 7)

  • Fossil records as clues to the past (7)

  • Changes in climate and biodiversity over our geological past (7)

3) Life on Earth is diverse and adaptive:

  • Animals and plants need to be well-adapted to their environment to survive (7) (FP)

  • Case study: the diversity of native plants in our Bayside garden (7) (FP)

  • Case study: comparing human body systems to the earthworm (6, 7)

    • Nervous system (6) (with math links to data collecting and analysis ! )

    • Endocrine system (6)

    • Locomotion and reproduction (6)

    • Cooperatively designing a model of the worm’s anatomy (6,7)

4) Energy and climate change:

  • Climate change and how all living things are interconnected (7) (FP)

  • Difference ways of generating electricity and their environmental impacts (7)

  • Basic circuits (with math links ! )
