English Language Arts 6 Course Outline


September 2019 - June 2020

Course Outline:

The aim of English Language Arts is to enable each student to understand and appreciate language, and to use it confidently and competently in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction, and learning. Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and present in order to:


  • Explore thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings

  • Comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts

  • Manage ideas and information

  • Enhance the clarity and artistry of communication

  • Respect and support and collaborate with others

(attached is a description of the Core Competencies as prescribed by the Ministry of Education)


Materials Required for Class:

pencil, blue pen, eraser, duo tang and extra lined paper….coloured pencils, scissors, and glue stick on occasion


General Topics:  In each term students will focus on general areas in the curriculum.


Term One: Novel Study (elements of a novel, spelling, comprehension)

Term Two: Writing (creative, narrative, persuasive, informative, descriptive)

Term Three: Poetry and Grammar

(Personal reading responses for comprehension and a writing journal will be consistent through all terms)


Assessment for Learning:  Students will receive a variety of tasks within each theme. Examples may include: Oral presentations, multimedia projects, journaling essays, vocabulary,...etc. It is expected that all students will hand in work that is neat and legible, includes their name, date, division and that shows evidence of pride (not rushed). Whenever possible, students will be involved in brainstorming the summative evaluation criteria and presentation methods so that they have a clear understanding of expectations. Students will be responsible for using an assignment tracking sheet in order to record assignments within their personal portfolios.
